Starting the physical work: As many artists discover, some methods work for them and others do not. I have also come to realize this when working on my own projects. However, it is all a part of the creative process and becomes a significant factor in the outcome. Preliminary ideas: While planning for this project, I took all the advice given to me from the last project and kept all of this in mind. Lack of experimentation was the main downfall for the last one so this time, I decided to have fun with my project and do more experimentation. There were so many ideas, but they had to be shrunk down to be realistically achievable within the short time frame. Many of these ideas included models, photography, sculptures, paintings and a variety of materials.
Using the ideas, I already had, I decided to combine some of the poetry with the sketches. This is not the last destination, just a moving step toward it. I really like the idea of combining the texts with the sketches and physical work. I have plans to evolve this into textile printing in the workshop. I have once done this before in school and the results were astonishing and really made a beautiful statement. I am also going to experiment with sewing and embroidery. I thought it would look great to sew some pieces together and then embroider the text into the work.
I have used some of my most favourite poets and incorporated them into my own artwork. The sketches themselves are fully inspired by artists such as Marina Abramovic, who stood still in a gallery for 6 hours while inviting the audience to do to her and her body, whatever they liked, using one of the 72 objects she placed down beside her. The famous performance piece was called “Rhythm 0”. Majority of these objects could be very harmful and deadly. Among the objects were a knife and a loaded gun. She uses her own body to make a very powerful statement. People stripped her naked, touched her, scratched her, cut her and did all sorts of other degrading things to her body. Afterwards, the artist said she felt raped. One quote from her was “I had a pistol with bullets in it, my dear. I was ready to die” and at the end of her 6-hour performance, the artist walked away, her body dripping in blood.
I also took inspiration from Yoko Ono’s art installation/performance called “Cut Piece” where she is seen having her clothes cut off, one by one, piece by piece. Her representation of the aftermath of rape and how society has created rape culture. I also looked at Emma Sulcowicz who carried around campus, the same mattress she was raped on in her college dormitory, after her rapist was pardoned. This was her greatest statement. The rules being, she could not ask or beg for help. She could only accept help carrying it, if someone were to offer. This piece was very inspiring. I intended to create similar but due to the current pandemic, performances are not permitted and my personal anxiety issues cause great challenge to this plan.
